Water Damage Restoration Case Study: Back Home in 2 Weeks

Water damage restoration

Water damage doesn’t just wreck a home, it displaces the people living in it. One of our recent clients found that out firsthand when a water intrusion forced her out of her home entirely. By the time she signed a contract with us, she’d already been living elsewhere, and she needed to move back in within two weeks.

When we gave her that timeline, she was honest: she didn’t think it was realistic. Here’s how we did it anyway.

The Situation

Water damage had affected multiple rooms of the home, saturating flooring, baseboards, and sections of drywall throughout. The homeowner had been displaced while the damage was assessed, and by the time she was ready to move forward with repairs, every week spent out of her home was a week too many. She came to us needing more than a repair plan. She needed to be back home, living normally, in two weeks.

The Challenge

A two-week turnaround for this scope of work is tight under the best circumstances. This job involved:

  • Packing up, moving out, and safely storing all of the homeowner’s furniture and belongings
  • Removing and replacing water-damaged drywall throughout the affected rooms
  • Removing and replacing damaged flooring
  • Installing new baseboard throughout
  • Full repainting of every repaired surface
  • Moving everything back in and resetting the home once work was complete

Each of those steps normally has its own timeline. Stacking all of them into two weeks meant there was very little room for delay, and none for guesswork.

Speed wasn’t just about getting her home faster. The EPA notes that mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours after water exposure, so getting damaged drywall and flooring out quickly also meant protecting the home from a second problem on top of the first.

How We Made the Timeline Work

We moved fast on move-out. Before any demo work started, our crew carefully packed and moved out the homeowner’s furniture and belongings into secure storage, so the space was fully clear and protected from day one.

We sequenced the work tightly. Drywall removal and flooring removal happened in parallel where the layout allowed, rather than waiting for one trade to fully finish before the next began. New drywall went in, got finished, and was ready for paint on a schedule built around the final move-in date, not worked out loosely as we went.

We kept crews on it consistently. A tight timeline like this doesn’t leave room for a job to sit untouched for a few days while crews are pulled elsewhere. We kept dedicated crews on-site to keep every phase, drywall, flooring, baseboard, and paint, moving without gaps.

We communicated constantly. The homeowner knew where the project stood at every stage. No guessing, no wondering if the move-in date was slipping.

The Result

Two weeks after signing the contract, the home had new flooring throughout, fresh drywall where the damage had been, new baseboard, and a full coat of paint on every repaired surface. Her furniture came out of storage and back into a home that looked, and felt, nothing like the one she’d been forced to leave.

She told us before move-in that she hadn’t expected it to actually happen on schedule. Watching her walk back into a finished, livable home right on time was exactly the outcome we were working toward from day one.

What This Project Shows

Not every project needs to move this fast, and we don’t cut corners to hit a date. But when a homeowner is displaced and every day away from home matters, a tight, well-managed timeline isn’t a luxury. It’s the whole point.

If your home needs repair after water damage, fire damage, or another unexpected event, timeline is probably one of your biggest concerns, right alongside quality. Our guide to questions to ask your contractor before signing covers what to ask about scheduling, communication, and scope before you commit to a contractor. And our Home Remodel Checklist is a useful reference even for repair projects like this one, since many of the same decisions apply.
